FIGURES FOR LAST YEAR
Over seven thousand criminal cases were dealt with by Magistrates and Justices of the Peace at the Magistrate's Court at Wellington during the past year. Court statistics show that 7498 criminal cases were recorded. If the 702 cases heard in the Children's Court are taken into account the total reaches 8200.
An analysis of the criminal cases against both males and females in the four quarters of the year discloses the following position:— First Second Third Fourth qr. qr. qr.. qr. Males .. 1270 1482 1893 2281 Females .. 119 156 147 150 Totals .. 1389 163S 2040 2431 The Children's Court dealt with a number of juvenile offenders, only a small proportion being girls. Males ... 140 200 215 101 Females .. 14 12 9 _11 Totals .. ~154 212 224 112 F^es and fines collected in the four quarters of the year were £2331 19s 6d, £4058 19s lOd, £2938 4s Bd, £3338 6s, making a total of £12,667 10s. In addition to criminal cases a number of civil cases were- dealt with. The number of plaints dealt with in four quarters were 1516, 1735, 1386, 1379. The total amounts sued for in those periods were £30,524, £28,498 14s 9d, £17,482 13s 9d, and £21,055 Is respectively.'
