BASEBALL MATCH

MORMONS BEAT WELLINGTON

A return representative baseball mgtch between a team of United States Mormons and a Wellington side was played at the Winter Show Stadium on Saturday, attracting a crowd of several hundred people. The match was won by the Mormons by 19 runs to 12 in a nine-innings game. Wellington's team was not as strong as on the first meeting between the two sides, for on this occasion the selection was confined to about four clubs. Nevertheless, the team, after a poor start, came back strongly in the third, fourth, and fifth innings and at the end of that time were withm two points of the Mormons, who had scored 10. In the final rally, however, the Mormons held a pitching and hitting advantage, and they made the runs without a great deal of difficulty. Once Wellington had recovered from the 8-0 deficit at the end of the first three innings, the; match became greatly exciting and the crowd, which included a surprising number of young women, quickly assimilated the fairly easy rules of the game. And towards the end, they barracked as freely and as partially as any bleachers' stand on an American big league ground. Then, too, the excitement of the game was increased by the freedom with which members of both teams urged on their members. The particular form of wise-cracking associated with baseball was freely used and the humour of the match was notable. Some of the Wellington players were probably hoarse by the end of the game, which took about an hour and a half to complete. The teams were:—Mormons: Catch, Dastrup; pitch, Toronto; first base, Parks; second, Price; third, Smith; I short stop, Watts; left field, Mason; [centre field, Campbell; right field. Kirkland, Substitutes, Pendelton, Parker, Hutchinson.

Wellington.—Catch, J. Cootes; pitch, P. Wilson; first base, F. Barrett; second, Frater: third, B. Barrett; short stop, J. Griffin; left field, Earl; centre, Connolly; right, Wrigley. Substitute, Gould.
