SATISFACTORY
TEMPORARY BASES
FLYING-BOAT SERVICE
(Received December 20, 1 p.m.)
DARWIN, This Day.
The commander 'of the Centaurus (Captain Burgess) and the flight superintendent of Qantas Airways (Captain Brain) are both satisfied that the temporary bases available for flying-boats between Singapore and Darwin would be satisfactory if an immediate extension of the flying-boat service to Darwin took place.
A cablegram received from • Sydney last week stated that Mr. Hudson Fysh, managing director of Qantas Airways, who arrived at Darwin -from England after conferences with • Imperial Airways, criticised the Federal Government for its failure to provide even temporary facilities to enable the Empire fiying-boat service to begin next month. The Minister of Defence (Mr. H. V. Thorby) declared that Mr. Fysh's complaint was groundless. On the contrary, the Commonwealth Government had honoured its obligations with the British Government. The negotiations so far had been most complicated. Extensive survey work had been carried out, and the Commonwealth was still awaiting a complete schedule of ground organisation from the British Government.
