CHAMPIONS TO COMPETE
: A decision to extend the distance of the Champion.Handicap on the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club's Christmas Meeting from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half, with a 3mm 17sec limit, was made by the committee of the Auckland Trotting Club when completing the programme. The class of the Champion Handicap will suit horses engaged in the Auckland Trotting Cup and the President's Handicap, both of which have a limit of"4rriin 25sec. These limits are the tightest provided by any club in the Dominion and are one second better than the New Zealand Trotting Cup.. By their success in 4min 26sec classes at Addington last week, Lucky Jack, Tempest, and Pot Luck have come into line for'the chief races at Epsom and will, he. welcomed to the list of eligibles for the Auckland Trotting Cup (says "Abaydos"). As a result of his win in the Lelievre Handicap, King's Play reached 4min 26sec from which he was second to Pot Luck in the Louisson Handicap. King's Play's owner may consider giving away 12 yards to enter him, which is permissible > under the conditions of the races; Thei prospects >of fine fields in the three1 principal events are very bright and there will be a strong contingent from the South Island. Mr. A. G. Mabee, who visited the New Zealand Metropolitan Meeting last week, stated that owners and trainers were enthusiastic about the programme and1 he was assured- of strong support. ' • -Of the horses who contested the New Zealand Trotting Cupp pwners of the following southern candidates signified their intention of visiting Auckland:— Lucky Jack, War Buoy* Pot Luck, Indianapolis, Tempest, : Cloudy- Range; De Soto, and Evicus,- -while there is also a. chance that Graham Direct may be included. : In addition; the owners of Red Shadow, ■ Worthy tight, Roi I'Or,' Rey Spec, and Rolld have, intimated their intention of making the trip. ..■■".■ King's Warrior and Bonny Azure will be included also, and word .has been received ■ that the Australian champion Lawn Derby, ■ accompanied by Speedy Boy, will probably arrive for the meeting. ■ Speedy Boy is on 4min 26sec, .but that may-not keep him from contesting the chief races. The presence of Lawn Derby and Indianapolis will be an attraction and the champions may meet in a recordbreaking attempt.
