PICTURES OP MERIT

BY VARIOUS ARTISTS

- A varied and interesting collection of pictures, both oils and watercolours, is at present on exhibition at the Bowen House gallery. The exhibition is representative o£ contemporary art in New Zealand. It is interesting to note the various styles adopted by the artists whose work is shown. RL Waghorn has some bold watercolours, several of which represent the I Dominion's magnificent mountain scenery. His painting of Mount Patriarch, Wairoa South, is particularly fine. Mrs. Boyes has some very Continental sketches, mostly in subdued, colours. Among the water-colours are several interesting scenes by Ann P. Hewitt and J. L. Palethorpe. Sunshine and trees have their glamour cleverly caught by Sydney H. Higgs, and other colourful scenes come from the brush of Marcus King. Some distinctive sketches of old villages in Britain are shows by Betty Rhind. Jean McKay exhibits a fine sketch of a glimpse of the sea through stately trees, and amongst her other. pictures is a good flower study. A painting of a bowl of anemones by Thane Field is a splendid piece of Work. There is much else of interest in the exhibition in addition to the items mentioned; ~
