"TIME-HONOURED EXCUSE"

"That is a time-honoured excuse that has been used in this country since •Courts were established," said Mr. W. F 4 Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today to James Frederick Embleton, a seaman, who was charged with the theft, at Wellington, on October 21, of a man's suit and suitcase, of a total value of £14, the property of Harry Wentworth Lintodt. Embleton's explanation to a detective was that he had bought the suitcase and suit from a strange man for 15s. • Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said that the suitcase and suit were left in a hotel office for Lintodt, and as no trace could be found of them later by Lintodt, the matter was reported to the police. The following morning the accused pawned the goods, and when interviewed by a detective he gave the explanation referred to above. The Magistrate convicted Embleton and sentenced him to three months imprisonment, and an order was made for the return of the goods.
