Because of the depressed condition of t th« footwear'manufacturing industry, the' tannery trade is suffering from lack of orders, with the result that ,staffs are being reduced. ~ r ■ One tannery firm this week shut doWn its fellmongery section, with the result' .that a quarter of its regular staff has been put off the pay-roll. This firm in the 20 years'of-its existence, -had- never previously put A off a man through lack of work, carrying its full staff through the big depression. Another firm has shortened its staff by 30. and other concerns have also put 'off men.

' "Always towards the end of the year there is a falling off ih orders, but the present slump in buying is earlier than usual and much more severe," said one tanner. "In 7 order to carry on, tanners are building up stocks, which is not a good business proposition, but we are striving so fcr-as is possible to keep our staffs together."
