PARROT AT LARGE

CHARGE AGAINST SEAMAN

(By Telegraph—Pregg Asgociation.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

Thomas Roach, seaman, was charged on summons with importing into New Zealand on October 30 an Australian parrot contrary to the Animals Protection and Gaming Act.

When Roach's counsel applied for an adjournment, Sub-Inspector Fox said that the maximum penalty was £200, or six months' imprisonment. As Roach was coming off the ship two Customs officers accosted him and found the parrot underneath his shirt. Roach deliberately threw the parrot into the air and thus disposed of the evidence. The charge was a serious one, as parrots were disease-carriers.

The hearing ■ was adjourned until Friday.
