THE NEW AGREEMENT OPERATION AS FROM TODAY The recently ratified Trade Agree ment between New Zealand and Gei many came into operation today. Th Minister of Customs (the Hon W Nash) stated last night that the neces sary Proclamation had been issued b; the Governor-General, and the dutie provided in the agreement woulc operate from today. Orders in Council were also issuei last night extending the reduced dutie applicable to sixteen specified class® of German imports to cover simila; goods from other countries with whicl New Zealand has "most-favoured nation" agreements. These countries are Argentina, Austria, the Economii Union of Belgium and Luxemburg Brazil, China, Czechoslovakia, Egypt Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy Japan, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Certain classes of goods specified ir the agreement with Germany are to b< exempt from primage duty and similai treatment will be extended to th< other "most-favoured-nation" coun tries. These goods, together with tfreii tariff item numbers, are as follows:— 227: Lenses, all kinds, unmounted and without attachments. 233: Artists' materials, viz., academj boards, canvas in the piece or or stretchers, oiled paper and drawing paper in blocks, colours, palettes, and palette-knives. 287: Emery paper, emery cloth, anc glass paper, cut into shapes, in rolls or in sheets.
