GALLIO'S SUCCESS

AUCKLAND'S CLOSE

LORD VAL FATALLY HURT

(By Telegraph.) (Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, October 11. With three successes, favourites hac a slightly better innings on the con eluding day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting today, but there were also some further surprises notably by Droll and Adsum. The Trentham visitors, Debham and Boomerang, again failed to run intc the money. An untoward incident was the destruction of that good and versatile horse Lord Val as the result of a fall in the hurdles. CONVINCING WIN. Besiege scored convincingly in the Normanby Handicap, stalling off a fine late challenge by Parquet. Besiege reached the "front at the end of three furlongs and held on to score by a head. Parquet came from well back. Glen Abb was a good third, clear of Mai de Mer, Mareana, Captain Bruce, Raepata, and Student Prince. The winner's performance was a good one, but Parquet was a bit unlucky in the running, and so was Glen Abb. FAVOURITE CRASHES. The Manukau Hurdles was another race of mishaps, Count Roussillon (H. Turner) falling heavily at the first fence, and the favourite Lord Val (F. Baker) crashing through the last, smashing the inside panel to smithereens. Approaching the final hurdle ihere was little separating Lord Val, High Quality, Prince of Orange, and Valpai, and High Quality then went on to win very easily from Valpai, with Prince of Orange, Emancipation, and Lady England at good intervals. High Quality looked as if he would have won in any case.Lord Val broke a small bone in a [eg and was destroyed. GALLIO IMPROVES. Anion began brilliantly in the Epsom Handicap, Gallio quickly running up ;o him. The pair were , always in the ran, and Gallio, an even-money chance, won nicely by a neck. . JCrilliarch Inished strongly to cut Bachelor King jut of third money, with Whirling -ight up and Prince Acre, Tqsh. Royal Dance, and Tray Bit following. The winner looked riiuch better than he iid prior to Saturday's race, and he is susceptible to still further improvement. Bachelor King ran his best race ;his season, and Whirling will arrive jt any time now. ' FINE RUN ON RAILS. Knight of Australia won the Spring Handicap by a fine- run on the rails. Se was always handily placed on the nside running, and, with the leader, /alamito, moving out in the run home, le secured an opportune opening. KU;owyn was a good third, just , clear of Soyal Appellant. There was a gap jack to Boomerang, Scotland, Mazir, Entail, and Mungatoon. Badly ridden n the Mitchelson Cup, Knight of Aus;ralia was not made so much use of ;oday, but Valamito might have won with a stronger horseman up. Koyai Appellant went a fine race and he jufiht to win shortly. Boomerang, Scotland, and Mazir all received very jad passages, the first-mentioned being ast at the half-mile. A SURPRISE WINNER. Adsum sprang a surprise when he .von the Onehunga Steeplechase to jay a double-figure dividend. Adsum, Chespis, and Rozel were together set;ing out on the last round, but Rozel laded out on the hill, where Adsum ;ook charge, and he had little difn:ulty*in beating Thespis and Red Fox. Windsor Lad. fell, and Emancipation md Domo dropped their riders. IN THE VAN THROUGHOUT, Arvakur led throughout in the Musket jtakeb to win nicely from Minga,. who s improving. These two cleared-right iway from the field ih the final. furong. Gay Hussar headed the bunch, vhich comprised Silver Cloud, Wynlrdo. Eastern Heir, Namara, and Bright iVings. A CLOSE FINISH. There was a surprise in the Hobson handicap, a sterling finish seeing Droll larrowly beat Inver, Marie's Acre, and High Sea, half a length covering the juartet. Droll paid over a quarter )f a century. Marie's Acre was in iront at the end of a furlong, and he ;ried to win all the way,.but he was neaten two half-heads. High Sea was :ight up fourth. This wag Droll's first :ace and she won nicely. Inver finishjd strongly on the rails and in another :ouple of strides would have won. High 3ea ran his best race to date. Mala*igi was last to leave the barrier and was then rushed round, the field to .veaken in the straight. A BETTER SHOWING. Lornacre improved on his sccond slacing on Saturday to win the Liverpool Handicap .in splendid fashion after Doing in the van for the .last five furongs. Kilonsa ran up to him, and tfter losing her position she came home .veil to run the winner to half a length. Dark Shadow gave further evidence of ■eturning form by being a good hird. Airam, Debham, Qrac, and Jonithan were next. Kilonsa was a shade inlucky. Airam was started from behind the field and so her fourth placing vas a very fine effort. .Debham was landy at the half-mile, but failed to :ome on.
