SMALL BOY'S LINES

FROM A FAMOUS FAMILY (By "Binocular.") In the closing stages of last season Small Boy, winner of the Mitchelsot: Cup on Saturday, burst into the limeJjgnt as a result of several very promising performances. After winning e hack mile at Waiapu, he went on tc the Waikato Racing Club's Winter Meeting to beat a smart field over a mile, Gay Rebel, Besiege, and Philemup being included. The merit of the Te Rapa victory brought Small Boy into favour for the Carbine Plate at the Auckland fixture in June, and he was sent out favourite. The faith imposed did not prove to be misplaced, although Small Boy had to be content with sharing the honours with Tail Light. Small Boy and Gay Rebel again clashed iri the Fitzroy Hack Handicap on the: final; day at Ellerslie, when Gay Rebel turned the tables at a difference of 141b in his favour. Returning to Poverty Bay, his home quarters, Small Boy proved capable of beating the open-class performers in the Winter Oats Handicap, a mile and a quarter event. However, the opposition was not particularly formidable, and he followed it up with another success on- the second day. Ushering in the new term with a further victory over a mile and a quarter at Poverty Bay, Small Boy showed form sufficiently promising to encourage his owner to undertake another trip into foreign territory. Two thirds in fairly strong company it the Taumarunui Spring Meeting, however, were hardly sufficient to prepare racing enthusiasts for a win in town-hall company of the Mitchelson Cup. That success brings his stakeivinnings for the current term up to the appreciable figure of £805. His Dwner, Mr. E. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne, also received a handsome cup valued at £50 to put on his sideboard as a "nemento of the occasion. Psychology, sire of Small Boy, has ?ot many useful performers, including that "fine mare .Cuddle, but Susan Lenox, his dam, left nothing of note .intil he came along. Susan Lenox, lowever, is a beautifully-bred mare, Detng by Kilboy from .Shona May, by Treadmill from Edna -May, by' Multiform from Helen Faucit, by Castor ;rom Cissy, and she traces back to ?railty, one of the famous branches of ;he Manto family. Edna May was the 3am of Battlescene, Starlike, and Phil Way, and Helen Faucit was the third lam of Nasstori. Cissy was a winner >f the Auckland Racing Club. Guineas md an own sister to Trenton. To :arry the family record further, Frailty was the dam of Zalinski (sire of Clean Sweep, V.R.C. Melbourne Cup, A.J.C. St. Leger winner), Cuirassier (Great Northern Derby), Havoc (Australian Hup), Siege Gun (Auckland Cup), etc. Small Boy was bred by Mr. S. E. Tackson and was bought by Mr. Fitz;erald, whose colours have long been jrominent on the Dominion Turf, Sunny Bachelor, Sunny Sky, Golden 31onde, De Friend, and Good Hunting laving all in recent years represented he East Coast owner. Golden Blonde vas Small Boy's companion on the Auckland trip, whereas .De "Friend ran n the Gloucester Cup at Hastings. Judging by the manner in which Small Boy is now running on .in his •aces, there appears to .be sound basis or his nomination in the New Zealand Hup, in which he ttieanwhile figures on he. minimum. - However, the big conest at Riccarton is a severe task, and t remains to be- seen whether Mr. "itzgerald 'will consider his representaive worthy of a trip south next month. A PROMISING ENTRY. Golden Sheila, winner of the Shorts iandicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, sigi ailed her entry upon her four-year->ld activities auspiciously, for she met md defeated a very smart field. It vas not till the closing stages of her ;wo-year-old career that the filly.' got >n the winning list, beating a:useful ield at Ohinemuri, and,she showed at Sllerslie a month later that the win lad been fully merited "by carrying iff the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, from. Wagner and Notium. However, the early promise was not naintained last, season, her record as i three-year-old including only one success, in the open sprint at Cambridge, although she was placed on two )ther occasions. Being by Gay Shield irom Madam Ruth, a half-sister (by Lackham) to Gay Sheila and Gay 3londe, all three being from Lady VTarie, she is well enough bred to go ,o still greater heights. A DIVIDEND-PAYER. Although now owned in the north, Sound Up, winner of the! final event at Sllerslie on Saturday, was originally >wned by the Hawke's Bay sportsman tfr. A. F. Symes, and the Lord Quex felding made, his race debut from the itable of Mrs.- A. W. McDonald at Vwapuni, • . A younger full-brother to Bodylme, Sound Up was very similar to his relaive in looks and make-up, and as a ;wo-year-old ■ he ' showed considerable jromise, winning the Pioneer Handicap it Riccarton, the Nursery Handicap at iVoodville, and the Juvenile Handicap it Wangattui..; . ' • . . Prior-to again racing he was gelded, jut, while he sobered down consideribly, he failed to reproduce his earlier orm as a three-year-old, and .was disposed of by his breeder to Mr. M. J. Moodabe. His new owner won two •aces with the gelding before passing lim on to Mr. T. Impey. of Auckland, vho races Anion, Arvakur, etc., and Vlr, Impey early secured a return ,vhen Round Up scored m the Shaw handicap at the Ohinemuri Club s Meeting last March: By his success on Saturday the little fellow has probably nore than repaid his purchase money, 'or, apart from the stake-money that ic has brought to his owner, very ucrative dividends have resulted in :ach instance. Nukerakau, the dam of Round Up md Bodyline, also produced Tinsmith, tfovel, Royston, Pukehou, Larwood, md Silver Quex, but the members of he family have hardly covered themselves with honour on. the .Turf, kike lis younger full-brother, Bodylme promised big things as a juvenile, but lack 3f inches has always counted against lim, although he had quite a good record in the hack. classes. Various sportsmen have made overtures to Mr. Symes lor Bodyline, some desiring to send him to the "ponies' m Sydney, jthers to continue racing him here in .Vew Zealand, and others to educate lim as a polo pony; but all the offers save been declined, and Bodyline is again undergoing ■ a preparation at kwapuni, WILLIE WIN IMPROVES (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, October 11. New Zealand acceptors for the Moonee Valley Meeting on Wednesday are! Hurdle Race, Colossical; Trial, first division, Luminare and Granvin; Gowrie Handicap, Greenhorn;. Springbank Handicap, Sir Simper. ' Willie Win, who caused anxiety last week, is now all right. Desert Chief, Wotan, and Flood Tide are doing well. International, who was galloped on last Saturday, is now all right.
