AN UPWARD TREND
CLUBS INCREASE STAKES (Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The general trend in stakes in the Auckland Province is deflnitely_on the increase. The Waikato Cup is worih £650 and the Alison Cup at Takapuna £500. The minlmiim stake at Te Rapa is £200 and practically toe same at Takapuna, with the exception of the maiden events. . . A move in the direction of keeping up the distance of handicap races has been adopted by the Takapuna Jockey Club for its fixture next month, and this is . particularly' pleasing in view of the fact that local horses claiming an engagement in the Auckland Cup and other valuable handicap races at Ellerslie at Christmas and the New Year will now have their last chances of a race in public afforded by the mile and a quarter event each day, instead of a mile and a quarter and then a mile, as before. In an effort to encourage the owners of two-year-olds, the Takapuna programme also provides for a £250 stake for this class. PROSPECTS LOOK BRIGHT.
