ORATORY CONTEST

SEDDON MEMORIAL CUP

The Wellington College annual unprepared speech competition for tha Seddon Memorial Cup was held in the Memorial Hall this week, the judge' being Mr. H. R. Biss, an old boy of the school. There were sixteen competitors who were allowed to select one of the two topics, "A journey I should like to take, and why," or "What I think is the best occupation in life, and why." Ten chose the former subject and six the latter. Those who spoke were:—S. D. M. Smith ("Travel in New Zealand"), P. A. Mitchell ("The Capitals of Europe , N. S. Beatus ("A Journey through China and Tibet"), R. J. Feil ("Through America and Europe"), S. T. H. Scoones ("A V"it to England'), R. J. Willing ("Life as a Marine Engineer"), J. M. Galloway ("The Homeland via Suez"), A. D. Dallaston ("Cook Strait and Marlborough Sounds"). R. K. Baxter ("Soviet Russia"). G. Irvine ("A i ourney Round the World"), A. Miles ("The Profession of Teaching"), F. E. O. Evans ("A Walk through Europe"), F. Akel ("Exploration"), J. R. McCreary ("School Teaching"), D. G. Castle ("A Literary Occunation"). and A. Falconer ("The Medical Profession"). Mr. Biss placed J. R. McCreary first and S. D. M. Smith second, N. S. Beatus third, R. J. Willing fourth, P. A. Mitchell, G. Irvine, and A. Miles fifth (equal).
