CHINESE VILLAGERS
MASSACRED WHOLESALE
The following telegram was received by the Chinese Consul from Nanking last night:—
The Chinese Press reports the wholesale massacre of innocents in villages under Japanese occupation. Five hundred inhabitants in Yanghang who [failed to evacuate with the Chinese army are reported to have been murdered in cold blood by Japanese soldiers. The entire fishing population of 300 are said to have been massacred following the Japanese occupation of Huangsha, a tiny islet on the mouth of the Yangtze River, with the apparent intention of turning it into a temporary landing field.
It is officially stated that Chinese bombers sank a Japanese destroyer off Swatow yesterday. Chinese planes beat off eight Japanese planes from Canton yesterday morning. .-No bombs were dropped.
Heralded by intense shelling and bombing of the Chinese position, the Japanese renewed their thrust yesterday towards Lotien and Luihang on the Shanghai-Tachang motor road.
