SCARE STORY

DENIAL BY ITALY

REPORTED WARNING

(Received September 18, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, September 17.

Britain this morning was regaled with another scare story that Italy had warned Britain and France not to interfere in the Mediterranean with Italian shipping or warships of any category. Inquiries by the Australian Associated Press in Whitehall discredit the story. It is pointed out that there is nothing in the Nyon Agreement directed against lawful movements of ships and warships.

' Britain does not propose to reply to Italy's rejection of participation in the Nyon arrangement. The subscribing Powers remain firm in the intention to carry out the plan, though they are willing to consider any suggestions Signor Mussolini may care to offer.

In Rome it is officially denied that any warning has been addressed to Britain and France, and it is stated that the report is without foundation.
