A GUTTER CROSSING

When L. G. Scott was charged in the Lower Hutt Court yesterday with failing to install a permanent crossing of cast-iron chequered plate over the side channel at his premises, the Magistrate (Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M.) remarked that the Borough Council had the power to do the work at the owner's, expense.

The borough inspector (Mr. J. Fletcher) said that the council would not let anyone interfere with the footpaths.

In that case, said Mr. Lawry, the owner could scarcely be charged with failing to install the crossing.

The case was adjourned to allow the Borough Council to look into this point.
