TENNIS

IN THE HUTT VALLEY

SUB-ASSOCIATION'S REPORT

The annual report of the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Sub-Association states that the past season had, from several points of view, been very successful when it was taken into consideration that the weather right throughout the summer months was most unsatisfactory. It was hoped that the coming season would be much better from all points of view. The inter-club matches again provided the main item of the srb-association. A total of 58 teams entered the competition, this being a decrease by two teams on the previous season's entries. The following clubs were the winners of their respective grades:—Senior A grade, Lower Hutt A; senior B, Waiwhetu; junior, Lower Hutt; thirds, St. Peter's and Paul's; fourth, Waiwhetu; fifth, Eandwick. The club championship for the club gaining the highest aggregate of points in inter-club matches was won by Waiwhetu for the second time in succession. The winners of the tournaments were as follows: —Senior women, Miss I. Neill; senior men, Mr. N. Edwards; junior women, Mrs. A. Corliss; junior men, Mr. W. Maxwell; third women, Miss M. Wilkins; third men, Mr. W. Moore-Carter. The winners of the doubles were; —Senior women, Mrs. A. Tilbury and Mrs. J. King; senior men, Messrs. G. E. Arms and C. Wesley; junior men, Messrs. R. K. Burgess and B. Hamer; third men, Messrs. P. Winnie and G. Corbett.

The ranking matches which were so popular during past years did not appear so during the past season. The committee was of the opinion that these matches would not be a success until the sub-association was able to run them off in a series of groups, and this would be impossible until the organisation's own courts were procured.

The grounds committee, although having nothing definite to report, had under view two pieces of land, one in the vicinity of Victoria Street and Hutt Road and the other at Randwick Road and White's Line. The first area was ■private property and a fairly large deposit was required. The second area was Crown land, and the committee was awaiting further particulars from the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Either of these two sites was satisfactory as far as locality was concerned. The financial position was satisfactory. AH clubs had paid their fees. The grounds fund stood at £302 and had been improved by over £200, mostly from the efforts of the queen carnival organisers. It has been necessary to draw on accumulated funds to the extent of £22 7s 3d, and this was largely due to cost of representative matches and the loss on the annual dance and presentation of trophies. There were 21 clubs, with a total membership of 971, affiliated with the sub-association. :
