ALL WELL BRED

WELLINGTON STAKES FIELD

It is an indication of the advance in breeding that all the three-year-olds engaged in tomorrow's Wellington Stakes are from named mares. Not so long ago cards were cluttered with horses out of unregistered dams.

Sandusky is by Jewel Pointer, one of the gamest of racehorses and one of Auckland's best perfo: lers a few seasons ago. On the dam's side Sandusky is a half-brother to the speedy Bonny Azure, as Bonnie Bingen foaled the pair. Bonnie Bingen is a daughter of Great Bingen and Muriel Dillon, who was got by Harold Dillon from Muriel Maddison (imp.). It is excellent blood, and Sandusky has all the attributes to make a great racehorse, .like others of his line, Bonny Azure and Dilworth.

Many of the best youngsters of recent years have been descended from1 imported parents on both sides, and Twos Loose is a case in point. He is by Jack Potts' from the imported mare Mercedes, who was brought to the Dominion by Mr. G. R. Hudson. Mercedes is a daughter of Peter Chenault, sire of Wrack. Peter Chenault took a record of 2min 44sec, and was later brought to the Dominion for stud purposes, but after a brief career had to be destroyed. Mercedes was out of Esperanza (2min 3Jsec), and thus both parents took a record of better than 2min ssec.

Bayard is a son of Frank Worthy and Bonny Logan. The last-named was a fine racehorse, and took a record of 2min 7 4-ssec before going to the stud, where she has already produced Gaillard.

Refund is a son of Great Bingen, champion two-mile performer a few years' ago. Great Bingen is the result of the mating of Nelson Bingen and Bertha Bell, whose deeds at the stud have been one of the high lights of breeding in recent years, and who also produced other good performers in Peter Bingen, Great Parrish, Worthy Bingen, and Great Peter. Nyallo, the dam of Refund, took a record of 2min 17sec, and is also the dam of that good pacer Taxpayer, who won, among other races, the New Zealand Derby. Nyallo is by Great Audubon from Millie C, who produced Acron (2rain 3 3-ssec), Auditress (2min 53sec), and Sir Author (4min 27 3-ssec).

Horsepower is a well-grown colt. Mr. G. Rosenbaum, his owner, bought Free Advice when she was in foal to Jack Potts for 75 guineas, and Horsepower is the foal. Jack Potts was a great racehorse, and one of his best performances was in finishing second in the Auckland Trotting Cup to Ahuriri, after he had tangled half-way down the straight. , There is no doubt the American horse should have won on that occasion. Jack Potts was foaled in 1920 and was got by Walter Direct, sire of 85 standard performers, from Margaret Steiner, by Steiner from Temple T., by Mambrino Clay. Free Advice raced well in both islands and took a mark of 4min 21sec, and is by Blue Mountain King from Intaglio, a daughter of Logan Pointer and Thelma, dam and grandam of champions.

Stamboul was got by Frank Worthy. Trix Pointer, dam of Stamboul, was a New Zealand Cup and Free-for-All winner, and has been a great producer. Her first foal, Wrackler, was one of the best pacers and trotters in the land. He took a mark of 4min 19 l-ssec as a pacer, and when converted to the trotting gait ran a mile and a half in 3min 15 4-ssec. Arethusa was the next foaling, and she won, among other races, the New Zealand Derby, and later paced • two miles in 4min 22 4-5 sec.

Blaydon is a gelding by Jack Potts from Ablaze, by Pedro Pronto (a good racehorse and sire) from Ellawood, dam of Harbour Light, 4min 31 2-ssec, and Real Light, 4min 28 3-ssec.
