SUSTENANCE FRAUDS

Prosecuted under the Justices of the Peace Act, Fred Simpson admitted seven charges of false pretences, obtaining sustenance amounting to £11 14s 4d. He stated that his wife had no assets when she had £560 to her credit in the savings bank. The defending counsel said that after hearing the Hon. P. C. Webb's warning against sustenance frauds at the .Town Hall recently, Simpson called at the Labour Department, confessed to misrepresentation, and offered to repay the money.

The Magistrate said that the case was different from the ordinary ones, and fined Simpson £10 on one charge and convicted him on the other.
