PROBATION GRANTED

On two charges of committing theft by receiving money totalling £13 10s on terms requiring him to account for it to Dominion Motors, Ltd., and failing to do so. Gerald Joseph Gibbs, a salesman, aged 42, appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today, Mr. P. D. N. Verschaffelt appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said that the accused was employed as a sales-' man by the firm from September, 1935. to July 9, 1937; He was authorised to, accept deposits, but withheld :an amount of £3 10s on June 19 and another of £10 on July 7. He confessed to the thefts when interviewed by Detective G. Hogan and Constable T. Chalmers. They were the only two of which he had been guilty, and full restitution had been made. Mr. Verschaffelt said that his client was separated from his wife. The accused was in receipt of an order from the Court to pay £16 10s, and very foolishly kept the money to pay. The accused was admitted to probation for twelve months on one charge, and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months on the other. For stealing £10, the property of Clara Mildred Cole, Robert Piercey Martin, a baker's assistant, aged 19, was admitted to probation for two years.
