ISLAND BAY BIRTHDAY

The Island Bay branch 'of the League of Mothers held its eleventh birthday meeting recently in the. Masonic Hall, Island Bay. Mrs. F. G. Janson presided. Mrs. Kersley, the Dominion president, and visiting presidents of many other branches were also present, each being given ,a spray oil spring flowers made by Mrs. Whitelaw. ' . ■ The speaker, Mrs. Blamires, took for her subject ""Vocational Education." She pointed out how essential it was that a child should be permitted to choose his or her own' career, and gave many instances within her own experience of seeing square pegs in round holes. Songs were contributed by two members, Mesdames Newman and P. N. Williams, and were greatly appreciated. An induction service was held, three ladies being received into full membership. . The thought for the month was given by Mrs* A. D. McLean: "Take every opportunity to do good and you will have no opportunity to do evil." Afternoon tea was served, everyone present receiving a piece of the birthday cake made by the president, Mrs. F. G. Janson. At the annual meeting last month the following officers were elected:— President, Mrs. F. G. Janson; vicepresidents, Mrs. Howard Cook and Mrs. Sherwood; secretary, Miss I. Craig; treasurer, Mrs. D. Williamson; registrar, Mrs. L. Whitelaw; tea convener, Mrs. Loadsman, magazine steward, Mrs. Orenlye; hostesses, Mesdames Sherwood and Duncan; visitors to the sick, Mrs. I. Ewan and Mrs. W. Kerr; "Cradle Roll," Mrs. J. McLean; reporter, Mrs. P. N. Williams; general committee, Mesdames H. Wilson, T. Bott, Kean, Collyer, and A. D. McLean.
