DISPUTED VICTORY

SQUARE RIGGERS' RACE

BERMUDA, September 6.

Completing the square riggers' race fronl Newport to Bermuda, the Joseph Conrad arrived at 1.56 p.m. and the Seven Seas 12min 3sec later. Owing to the time allowance based on the difference in sizes, the smaller vessel, the Joseph Conrad, claimed the victory by llsec. The Seven Seas also claimed the victory, alleging that the Joseph Conrad failed to finish under sail.

The "New York Times" asserts that it was the Seven Seas that finished at 1.56 p.m., and the Conrad later. "The Times" version is the more likely in view of the time allowance.
