PEARLING TRAGEDY

DIVERS ABANDONED

FIRE ON LUGGER

(Received September 8, 11.20 a.m.)

DARWIN, This Day.

Three Japanese pearling divers had to be abandoned at the bottom of the ocean when the Japanese lugger Dai Nippon Maru No. 1, from which they were working, caught fire.

The divers had just commenced operations when the compressor exploded, and the flames spread with alarming rapidity. The men 'on the deck were forced to abandon the lifelines and take to the sea, leaving the divers helpless on the bottom. The lugger foundered, and the crew were rescued by other pearling ships.
