CYCLING CLASSIC

The New Zealand road championship will be'decided oh October 2 over the Waimate-to-Christchurch course of 145 miles. It is the longest and most rich-ly-endpwed race held in the Dominion. The event will again be conducted by the. North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union.

The race was first promoted in 1899, and has been held regularly since that date. It was originally held over the famous Timaru-to-Christchurch course of 112 miles, but in 1930. owing to the improved roads, the distance was increased to 145 miles.

The race attracts nominations from every province in the Dominion and has produced many champions, including Dick and the late Jack Arnst, Phil O'Shea, Harry Watson. With the roads now in perfect order, being paved practically throughout, a record race is anticipated this year.
