SHORTAGE OF LABOUR

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—With reference to a letter signed "Painter and Paperhanger" in a recent issue of "The Post," I am also at a loss to know on what grounds Mr. Lee bases his statement in respect of a shortage of labour. I am in a position similar to the correspondent, and have been able to obtain only intermittent work for a considerable time past owing to the fact that my usual employer finds it difficult to obtain -contracts. A man may comply with the provisions of the 40-hour week and find a competitor working with a number of non-unionists probably under some form of co-operative agreement whereby . they work the - maximum number of hours possible throughout .the week, including Saturdays and holidays. - The 40-hour week is undoubtedly, under present conditions, all in favour of the non-unionists and some form of amendment to the Act is urgently needed.—l am, etc.,
