NEW JUDGE FOR EGMONT
(Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, This Day. ' The Egmont Racing Club has appointed Mr. A. V. O'Brien, of Wellington, to act as judge at its next meeting; The position has been made vacant by the resignation of Mr. W. P. Russell, whose recent appointment as handicapper to the Canterbury Jockey Club necessitates his presence at the time of the Egmont Meeting. Regret was expressed at the severance of associations with Mr. Russell. Mr. A. V. • O'Brien, who is well known to. sportsmen as "Carbine," has had lengthy experience as an observer and reporter of racing and has already acted' efficiently in '■ a- j udicial 'capacity at several meetings. ': The fact that the mare Verdict, a winner of the Cambridgeshire; is' not eligible for the General Stud ' Book does' not deter sportsmen' from offer-ing-high prices -for her yearlings. Last year her- daughter, Quashed, won the, 4scot Gold Cup, beating Omaha, and' her r?n, Thankerton, was third in the Derby. Lady Barbara, Smith, owner of yeri-Ict, lost the mare's foal by Hyperion, but at the Newmarket sales last r onth Lord Glanely paid. 4200 guineas lor Verdict's colt by . Cameronian. Thankerton brought 4800 guineas,, and Arthingworth and' Guilty, also' Verdict's progeny, realised 3800 guineas and 4000 guineas as yearlings. . :
