NEW BRIGHTON TROTS

POT LUCK IN BURWOOD (Special to the "Evening Post.") ' CHRIST.CHURCH, September 4. The experiment of the New Brigh-. ton Trotting Club in "starting its meeting at ten o'clock in the' morning, to minimise the clash '•with .the second. Rugby Test, proved a success, so much so that other citys clubs may be tempted to follow this lead for Saturday meetings. : There was a large attendance, and some excellent racing. The South African footballers were present for the early events and to them the outing was a great, novelty. Several horses with engagements at the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting next Saturday competed, and a number of them were prominent.

NALINGA WINS WELL.

. The Improvers' Handicap attracted some very promising trotters. Judgement soon took charge from Chudleigh and Listowel, while Nalinga was handy after half a mile, with ■ Pilot. Pe^er closing up. Nalinga took charge about three furlongs from home, with Pilot Peter handy, then Listowel, and Indolent was improving his position. Pilot Peter challenged in the straight, but Nalinga beat him decisively .by two lengths. Indolent was five lengths away, then Judgement, Listowel, and Survivor. The winner did some pre-. liminary racing at a npn4otalisator meeting before winning at Ashburton in June. He will do a lot better.

FRANCISCO REARS AT START.

The Seaview Stakes, for . maiden three-year-olds, was a good face.--.: It opened unluckily, as .the', favourite, Francisco, reared at the start, losing about sixty yards. Bayard led out from Refund and Sentiment, but after three furlongs Sentiment took. .charge from the other pair, with Stamboul and Direct Parrish heading the others, and Francisco had joined in with the bunch. Half a mile from home Refund was showing the way to Sentiment, Bayard, and Francisco. • Turning 'for home Francisco was in second place, with Taruna "moving, up.., Refund stayed on well to beatJFranciscq by a length, Taruna being two lengths away, then Bayard, Three Bells, .and BlThe°winner, by Great Bingen from Nyallo, is a brother to Taxpayer. It was his first race and he looks like beine very good. Francisco put up a martaort after her bad luck at the- start. She has failed to go off smoothly in other races but once on the way she is an attractive pacer. POT LUCK AFTER BAD START. Pot Luck put up a fine effort-to win the .Burwood Handicap after losing . aboui ■ twenty-four yards at the start. Big Author also sto.od oir the mark. Village Guy led out and soon was ioined by Sea Gift, with Isabel. Derby, ! 3Queen Author, and Gunfire. handV. Sm«oger moved up along the back and 'ah^if wUrf LlSyn^id?^ joined in! A YOUNG ARMY. i A field of twenty-nine .took part in the Belfast Handicap. When the field settled down Lord Axworthy, ■ Thornworthy, and Jovial. were _ prominent, but after three Lord Axworthy was joined by pol^el ■Gra,.tan in the lead, witli Jovial, BellGrattan; and Thornworthy. handy.. Colonel Grattan and Jovial Jed 'Stylish Boy Bill Grattan, and Oasis, . who headed a big bunch. Stylish Boy, Bill Grattan and Colonel Grattan led to the straight. An excitmg. finish saw Bill Grattan stall off a late challenge by Oasis by half a length, Stylish Boy,being half a length -, away, with Colonel Grattan a lengtlj; further back. The winner .was always going well, and he stuck on:like' a sound stayer

BLAIR ATHOL IN TURN.

The Pacific Handicap showed Blair. Athol as a good horse Treasure Bond and Mystery Yet broke at the start Sage King led out from A Fris<:o Boy,. Real Burton, and Blair Athol. They were still showing the.way afcthe end of a mile,, where Golden Cross..Mystery Yet, and Play On were nexCßeal Burton then went on with Sage Jung, but there was no further change till the home turn, where Sage King .retired, Blair Athol joining Real Burton in the lead, with Mystery Yet handy and Eighteen Carat moving up. Blair Athol then shot out and won by two lengths, and Eighteen Carat got up on the post to beat Mystery Yet by a head, with Real Burton another head away. . , '. . ■ .' ■'

RANK OUTSIDER WINS.

Captain Bolt was the early leader in the Spring Handicap, but he and Lady Sonoma broke along the back, Reward going on from Kippagh, Little Beta, and Lament. With half, the journey gone Kippagh was showing the way to Reward, Little Reta, Mataunga, and Lament. Half a mile from home the order was Kippagh,. Little Reta, and Lament, with Norman Fox heading the others. There was no further ■ change, Kippagh winning by a length,:-and six lengths away Lament just stalled_off a late run by Norman Fox. .. .The winner "was one of the outsiders of the field. He went without ..a mistake.

DOUBLE GREAT SOLIDLY.

Navy Blue Was smartest out in the Wainoni Handicap, - Double. ■ Great, Southern Smile, Frisco Lady, Little Nelson, and Gunfire following her after two furlongs,' with the others' handy. There was no change till they reached the home turn, where Navy Blue starte dto drop back, leaving Double Great in front. Southern Smiles joined him a little further on, but Double Great hung on to beat her by a neck. Frisco Lady was four lengths away, , with Little Nelson and Navy Blue following at intervals. Double Great has been racing very consistently, and just too solid for Southern Smile.

WORTHY KING IN. SADDLE.

The Electric Handicap was a poor race for a wind-up. Social Pest and Golden Direct began well, but Worthy King went off fast from the: back. He was in front after two furlongs,' having a lead of four lengths at the halfmile post, where Golden Direct and Nobleman were at the head of the others. Worthy King then increased his lead and'he won pulling up. by four lengths from Eighteen Carat, who beat Plutus by. two lengths, with Renown's Best and Golden Direct leading a -stums-out field. Worthy. King revelled ih the heavy - ground. The favourite, Renown's Best, never looked dangerous.
