NEW COURSE
MANAWATU RIVER (Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. An event of major interest to ths settlers of Makerua on the one side and Rangitane on the other occurred yesterday morning when the Manawatu River broke through Page's Point to assume a new course. It was considered that this would happen sooner or later owing to the heavy erosion that has taken place in the locality in the last twelve months. The immediate effect is to isolate Hamilton's Bend of a mile in length. Now the river is running in, practically a straight course, and . settlers are anxiously watching the effect lower down stream. ' Fears have been expressed that the speed of the fiver would be accelerated when Hamilton's Bend ceased to act as a cushion, and perhaps it is fortunate that the break has occurred when there is only a slight fresh in the river. In four hours the break had widened to about a chain, and with the soft nature of the soil the river1 should not be long in settling down into a normal course.
