THE SEVEREST YET
FIGHTING IN SHANGHAI AREA
The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consul from Nanking last night:— "Yesterday there was witnessed the severest fighting since the outbreak of hostilities in the Shanghai area. The Chinese forces at the North Station and in the Kiangwan sectors are holding out against powerful Japanese attacks, while our troops near the mouth of the Whangpoo River' launched a counter-offensive against the landed Japanese troops. Two thousand more Japanese troops landed in the vicinity of the Woosung forts and Woosung village yesterday. The estimated Japanese reinforcements already arrived at Shanghai total three divisions, which are known as Japan's . crack forces.
"Five hundred million dollars oi national salvation bonds are being actively subscribed, and contributions are pouring in from Chinese overseas. Nearly one million dollars was received yesterday."
