AMATEUR BILLIARDS

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

WIN FOR MOSES

The New Zealand amateur billiards championship, which was concluded ia the V.M.C.A. rooms last night, resulted in a win for the title-holder, S. Moses, of Wellington, who defeated C. E. Peek, also of Wellington in the final of 1500 up. The final was divided into three sessions, each of 500 up, held m the morning, afternoon, and evening.

Moses was leading 501 as against Peek's 455 at the conclusion. of the morning session, and in the afternoon session carried his unfinished break of 23 to 106, this being the second threefigure break in the contest. When the afternoon session closed Moses was still in the lead, having 1000 points as against Peek's 902. Leading: breaks were:—

Moses: 106, 24, 27, 32, 34, 26, 22, 21

Peek; 62, 24, 27, 24, 33, 22 29.

Moses started the evening session with 1000 points to Peek's 902, and continued his unfinished ■bie'ak of 13, which he carried on to 24. Both players then resorted to safety tactics, and there was a'dull period until-Peek put on a fine bj-eak of 44. Moses' reply to this was a masterly contribution' of 52, mainly through losers to the centre pocket off the red. The run of the balls favoured Moses, but Peek kept plugging away with great determination, and at one time was within 42 points of the champion. A well-played break of 4ff made Peek 1242 to MoseY 1254, but Moses drew away again with a useful string of 39. A 56 by Moses was. a splendid effort and made him 1445 to his opponent's 1342. There was heartyapplause from the large audience when Moses ran to 1500 with Peek at 1362, and thus won the New Zealand championship for the second year in succession

Prizes were presented to the winners by the president of the Wellington Amateur. Billiards Association, Mr. F. W. Vosseler. '
