JEWISH NEW YEAR
Monday will be New Year's Day for the Jewish section of the community, as September 6 this year marks the first day of the year 5698 of the Jewish era. The' Jewish, year varies according to the phases of the moon, and is consequently divided up into cycles. The variations are necessary to prevent certain feast days coinciding v.-ith.the Sabbath. The first such day of the incoming Jewish year will be observed on September 15, the Jewish Day of Atonement. '
