DEPLETED ATTACK

UNEXPECTED SUCCESS

NEW ZEALAND LEADS SURREY

MOLONEY'S SLOWS

(From the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) (Received July 30, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 29. When the cricket match at the Oval was continued today New Zealand, after making 495, its highest total for the tour, achieved an unexpected but meritorious success in the field and dismissed Surrey, a reputedly strong balling side, for the moderate total of 277 on a perfect^ wicket with, an attack which was impoverished by the absence of Cowio and Dunning. The former retired with stomach trouble 'after taking two cheap wickets and the latter had a sore leg.' Batting again, New Zealand had'made 42 runs without losing a wicket at stumps. The match was again favoured by fine weather, and surprising interest was displayed in it for an off-day, the attendance being about 7000. V; 'l the overnight score of 459, Page (77) and Dunning (6). continued the tenth wicket partnership until the stand had been worth 52 runs. Page was caught at cover when he had scored 90, his tally including seven 4's. After Cowie and Dunning had been forced to retire, Weir and Hadlee were the only bowlers above slow pace, but only Sandham among the early Surrey batsmen was comfortable. He stayed nearly three hours. HECTIC PERIOD. Moloncy enjoyed a hectic period of deadly effectiveness, taking three wickets for no runs in two overs. Surrey had eight wickets down for 147 runs, but Watts and. Gover, two bowlers, by hitting vigorously, added 124 at great pace. Watts gave a fine display of a little over an hour. He hit nine 4's, and Gover six 4's. Gallichan had a field day in the slips, taking three good catches. Moloney's success again illustrated how invaluable is a leg spin bowler in England. In view of the depleted attack, the tourists were unwilling to attempt the task of dismissing the county a second time, and the follow-on was not enforced, and New Zealand batted for three-quarters of an hour.
