SUGGESTED CHANGE

NAME OF ELECTORATE

(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") : BLENHEIM,.This Day. .; Since the .change, in the electoral boundaries by which those of the Wairau electorate are made the same as for the Marlborough -Province,the suggestion that . the .electorate's name should be changed to Marlborough has been gaining wide' support. An mdi.cation that it is'proposed to initiate a campaign to bring about>the change has given by the Marlborough Progress League,.whose president, Mr. W. J.. Girling, a former member of Parliament for the... electorate, has authorised that letters ;-be .sent-'to all local.bodies in the;district, including the Kaikoura County Council, asking for support if or the. proposition.; Both Mr.: Girling and the . present member of. Parliament. Mr. E. P. Meachen, express themselves as wholeheartedly.persuaded that a change in (he name would overcome a good deal of inconvenience, for at the present the'electorate's name was .frequently confused with' Wairoa or Waiau. The name Wairaii' did not convey in any way where .the electorate was, nor did it give any. idea of the number of people it represented. If the ' name were changed to Marlborough people outside would, know immediately which ■ part of New Zealand' was referred to. Local. bodies have ■'• been asked .to -make -independent requests to the Government in-addition to representations to.the Progress League.
