COLOURFUL SCENE

BATTALION PARADE TROPHIES PRESENTED A large number of, interested spectators were present at the Garrison i Hall last evening when the Ist Battal--1 ion of the Wellington Regiment held its ; annual inspection and presentation of trophies'. The parade was carried out 1 with full ceremonial, the military band 1 in scarlet tunics, the pipes and drums . in tartan kilts, the broaa red sashes of the sergeants, and the flashing swords , and bayonets making a colourful spectacle. The battalion commander, Major E. ' M. Stace, E.D., headed the parade, the adjutant being Captain L..W. Andrew. 1 V.C., N.Z.S.C. ' The unit was inspected by Colonel I. T. Standish, C.M.G.. D.5.0., A.D.C., R.N.Z.A., Officer Commanding the Central Military Command. After the inspection Colonel' Standish presented the medals and trophies, and addressed the battalion. He congratulated the trophy winners and complimented the unit on its turn-out, making special mention in this respect of the military band of "the regimem, whose playing and bearing at this and other functions in the past were deserving of praise. He referred to Wellington Regiment as a unit old in military tradition and history, a regiment of whose records its present members might be justly proud. The parade then marched, past, Colonel Standish taking the salute. Later in the evening a section, from D (.Support)- Company gave a demonstration with the Vickers machine-gun. The men wore steel helmets and ga^ masks, and carried out the action using blank ammunition, a. target bein^ indicated on a landscape' painted on the wall of the Garrison Hall. During the evening appropriate music was played by the pipes and drums and the military band. Supper, at which all present were the guests of the Regiment, concluded the function.
