SOCIAL PROGRESS
CENTRAL CROUP MEETING
The annual meeting of the Wellington Central Group of the Social Progress Movement was held at the home of Mrs: A. Gillies yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs. J. Bennie) presided.
The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. J. Bennie; secretary, Miss Schramm: committee, Mesedames A. Gillies, Malton Murray, A. Duncan, D. Anderson, . T. Clark, Logan, V. Recce, A. Hunt, and Misses E, Richardson, E. Watson, Westrupp, and Wl. Thompson.
Mrs. Bennie presented Miss Gibson, the retiring secretary, with a bouquet, and voiced 'the appreciation of members, of her work during .her term of 'Office. A recitation was given by Miss Ngaire Thomson.
Mrs. A. Gillies, who recently returned from Canada, spoke of the effect of State Control, which had replaced Prohibition, and gave a brief outline of the numerous clubs in Canada, social and education, and their work for the community. Every school in Canada was incorporated with the League of Nations. "Daughters of the Empire" was a most important and influential women's society in Canada," said Mrs. Gillies. "Women's institutes played a great part in the lives of women in the provinces, and these societies were liberally subsidised by the Government. Lord Tweedsmuir, the Governor-General, was very popular.
A vote of thanks was accorded to the speaker for her. address.
