DANCE AT SILVERSTREAM
{From "The Post's" Representative.)
A very successful benefit dance was held at Silverstream recently in aid of the Free Ambulance. There was a splendid attendance, nearly 200 people being present. The many beautiful gardens of the district provided masses of lovely flowers and shrubs for the scheme of decoration, which was carried out with Iceland poppies and birch and with bowls of white heather. Similar flowers were vised on the tables in the supper-room, where glowing log fires burned cosily, and a delicious home-made supper added to the general enjoyment. . The Mayor, Mr. McCurdy, was present and spoke briefly, eulogising the work of the Free Ambulance. Inspector Roffe gave some interesting details of the services rendered and the costs involved by the society. Both speakers thanked the committee for their support and financial assistance. The committee comprised Mr. Purvis (chairman), Mrs. D. Ev.Hamilton (hon. secretary), Mrs. A. Jackson (hon. treasurer), Mesdames Andrews, Kurth. Callingham, Ritzma, Crosbie, Glover, and Cleaver. Mr. J. Hamilton made an efficient M.C., and Messrs. Jackson, Cleaver, Glover, Gordon Hamilton, and Jim Glover gave valuable assistance. As a result of the dance £13 9s, which included a generous donation from each of the members of the orchestra, was handed to the Free Ambulance. Girls' Club Concert. The president of the St. James's Girls' Club, Mrs. Griffiths, and members presented an excellent concert to a large audience on Wednesday night. Mrs. Griffiths had an abundance of talent in the club to work upon, which showed to advantage, especially in the arrangement, execution, and dressing of several charming ballets, which were a feature of the programme. All the items were enthusiastically encored, and presentations were made to the accompanist, Miss Helen Hardy, and to Mrs. Griffiths, the organiser. Popular Entertainment. The social committee of the Lower Hutt Returned Soldiers' Association held a very enjoyable and even better attended dance than usual on Thursday night, when the cheerful clubrooms were filled to capacity, auguring well for the success of the forthcoming annual ball.
