ITS VALUE FOR NATIONALS

For the last fifteen years the Christchurch Hunt Club's Meeting, which i 3 staged two Saturdays before the opening of the Grand National Meeting, has afforded racegoers a valuable glimpse of the form that is to have its more testing trial at the bigger fixture. A number of the National horses do not race at the Hunt gatherip" but on occasions,the Hunt form has paid following .at the C.J.C. Meeting. The representation of National horses this year is among the strongest that has ever been secured at the Hunt. There was no Hunt racing last year, as the fixture had to be abandoned because of a snowstorm; but two years ago the Grand National Hurdles win- | ncr was the horse who had scored in the Longbeach Hurdles at the Hunt. That horse was Jolly Beggar, who also won the Grand National Hurdles again last year. Tomorrow. Jolly Beggar is not taking on the fences but is competing on the flat in the hack mil<? event, in which he is capable of making quite a good showing, as he has class and can stay. well. . . - WINO A YEAH LATER. The last Brabazon winner was Wino, who went out favourite ten days later for the Winter Cup but failed to gain a place. Twelve months subsequently Wino scored a surprise .win in the Cup, when the favourite was his non-coup-led stablemate, Ponty. In the year in which Wino failed, the Winter Cup winner was Epris, who had not started at the Hunt, and the second horse was Knockfin, who had also been' runnerup to Wino -in the Brabazon. The Brabazon has only once been won. by a horse who has gone on to capture the Winter Cup in the same year. That horse was Toxeuma under the record weight of 11.5 (9.0 minimum then) in 1930.
