DOUBLE SUCESS

LOCAL YACHTING

SEASON IN REVIEW

Wellington's success in New Zealand yachting last season and its bright prospects for the coming. year were mentioned by Mr. Cliff Hollis, chairman of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association, at its annual meeting bri - Wednesday night. .''■■'■ ■■ ' ■ ■•-■■ •"• ' " The Sanders Cup, he said,' after "some.; years, had been brought home -by Lavina and the province' had every reason to-be proud of the performance of her crew. Congratulations were extended to Mr.-Jack-Coleman and his men. In the Idle Along championship Vampire, after an interesting' contest, wrested the trophy from the Tauranga representatives- in their own waters. Taking into consideration the tidal nature of the' harbour, and the local knowledge of other-competitors, Evan Julian and his crew were also to be highly complimented •on their success. In the Cornwell Cup contest the- Wellington crew, while .performing with credit, was not able to register a win,- but Mr. -Hollis extended warmest congratulations to the Plimmerton. Boating Club for its win. With 'the aim of obtaining, control of the Sanders Cup and Idle Along contests in 1940, said Mr, Hollis, the association had waived all claims to these cups in 1038, and it seemed likely that the contests' Would be held on Port Nicholson in 1940. .

Other provincial races, the interclub, Duncan, Vernon -Groves, Holmes, Monotype, Tauranga, Barron, arid Porirua Clips, were suecessfuly conducted, and the racing generally throughout the season was well contested, although the weather somewhat marred Anniversary • Day. The -association acknowledged the donation of a challenge shield for inter-club team racing in the Idle Along class by the M.lC.Millinery Company. The shield was contested for the first time last season, and the fixture should . prove very popular in the future. '■' , ; "As to the finances of-.the association, w<v have come through a strenuous year fairly creditably," said Mr. UoU lis. "We show a slight cash, deficit, and when you consider that, we ..have financed three crews away, run .Anniversary Day and all our fixtures, and managed to pay our way, you will appreciate that w e have not.done, so badly. Some effort wili' have to; be made, however, to start raising money for 1940 if we are going to .do justice to the programme we hope to put on. I think this is something.that will have to be borne in mind next year, as time is getting short and at present we are not a wealthy body. '• Prizes were presented as follows:— Holmes Cup, Nahlin, J.Ypung;: Campbell Cup, Lavina, J. Coleman; Vernon Grove Cup, Marie, H. Davis; Civil Service Club Cup (Mono type),. Robin, W. Reid; Tauranga Cup.W.eka^N. Searle; Inter-club Cup, Lavina (R.P.NA.C);_ J Coleman; M.K. Millinery Cup (Idle Along teams race), E.B.Y. and M.8.C.; Duncan Cup, Wairoa, W. Pycrpft.
