DOMINION'S DEFENCE POLICY

"We would have not have passed a resolution of confidence in the Government's defence policy if we had not been satisfied with it," said Mr. W. E. Leadley, president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, at the quarterly meeting (reports the "Press"). He was discussing what he described as "inside information" on defence which was given in committee in an address to the recent Dominion conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association by Mr. J. A. Lee (Parliamentary Under-Sec-retarydn Charge of Housing). "I cannot discuss the information that was given," he said, "but I can assure you that the Government* is not sitting down on its job. It is fully alive to the question of defence and is taking all adequate steps to defend New Zealand. You will realise that when the Estimates come down next year. Adequate defence is being provided, and New Zealand is falling into line with other parts of the Empire." He said that the conference had passed a resolution expressing confidence in the defence policy of the Government, and this would not have been done if it had not been satisfied that adequate steps had been taken.
