ROYAL" MEMORIAL

SUCCESS OF APPEAL

MR. SAVAGE GRATIFIED

The success of the campaign for tha King George V Memorial Fund--was referred to by the .Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) at the civic reception to the Prime Minister (the Rt.'; Hon. M. J. Savage) in the Town Hall last evening. The campaign had been inaugurated by .Mr. Savage before he left for England, said Mr. Hislop. It was a campaign with an object that aroused the enthusiasm of the people of the Dominion, and he asked to be pardoned for possibly a little egotism When he told the Prime. Minister of the part the citizens of Wellington had played in it. In the city of Wellington and its immediate suburbs there had been raised a sum of just \mder £17,000, a sum which placed Wellington per head of population ahead of any other part of New Zealand. They had been very glad of the opportunity of getting behind the appeal .and of demonstrating on that occasion, as the people of Wellington had been able to demonstrate on ftvwdjr- occasion when they were called ifpna to support a great cause, that they did so wholeheartedly and vigorously,- and were worthy cithiens. of the Capital City.

Mr. Savage said that .it was very pleasing, to him to find that "the" campaign had been "' such an unqualified success.. There had been a certain amount of risk about it, but he. felt, that there was no better way of expressing their appreciation of. /the woi'k of a great King. He congratulated'the citizens of Wellington on their .wonderful response to the appeal:. The, success of the appeal had satisfied him .that New Zealand people, would rise to as great a height as any other people on the face of the. earth.
