SHEEP OWNERS MEET

Opposition to the graduated land tax was expressed in the report presented to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Sheep Owners' Federation yesterday. The report referred to the "unfair incidence of the tax as it affects | the farming community," and noted with satisfaction that the abolition of land tax and the substitution of graduated income tax, advocated by the federation, was now being endorsed by Dominion chambers of commerce, as well as by other farmins organisations. Matters affecting the industry which were . discussed at the meeting were anomalies in respect to the cartage of stock, in regard to which it was resolved to wait on the Transport, Agricultural, and Justice Departments; the standardisation of woolpacks, which was opposed; and the proposed restriction of the weigh of wool bales, which was considered, impracticable. Delegates were present from Poverty BayEast Coast, Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. H. D. Acland, Christchurch; vice-president, Mr. J. S. Jessep, Wairoa; lion, treasurer,. Mr. E. Hay, Canterbury. Satisfaction was expressed that the rise in wool prices had made it possible to give added inducement to competent shearers and shed workers to carry on the work for the coming season.
