WELLINGTON SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Wellington Red Cross Society was held recently, Mr. F. S.-Pope being m the chair The chairman welcomed Di. G. Maclean to the committee. Headquarters advised that the loilins Cup competition would be held in Palmerston North in August. A team comprising the following were m training for this event:—Misses A. Nicholl (captain), E. Armstrong, P. Orr, O. Bell, Mesdames N. Laursen, E. M. Wray, and emergency Mrs. J. Preston. Headquarters advised of the projected visit of the Under, SecretaryGeneral of the League of Red Cross Societies (Mr. de Giclgud). A special sub-committee was set up to formulate a plan of reception to the-visitor. A letter was received from the Women s Institute expressing appreciation of the secretary's recent address and asking that the society agree that the name be added to the list of panel speakers. It was resolved that the_ fullest cooperation be shown in this matter. The Red Cross nurse reported that classes in first aid and hygiene and sanitation had commenced. The second course for the year in home nursing would commence early next month. Members of the Voluntary Aid Department had held their usual monthly meeting and were busy working for their stall at the Red Cross Fair. A lecture on gas warfare had been arranged for later in the month, Mr. Kidman being'-the lecturer. Members had visited Ewart Hospital in June, dispensing a programme arranged by Mr. Stapp, whose services were greatly appreciated. The ladies in charge of visiting patients in Victoria Ward reported that visits to 50 patients had been made and comforts distributed. The honorary joint secretaries of the cafeteria submitted an interesting report showing that during the month 1819 people had patronised the cafeteria receiving refreshments. Donations to the work amounted to £6 10s 3d. The honorary secretary of the Ladies' Auxiliary furnished a report showing that boots, clothing, blankets, and layettes had been distributed among special cases of distress. Dressing gowns had been made for patients in hospital. Donations to layettes amounted to £X 9s to be expended on the purchase of new material.

A comprehensive report covering the work of the Junior Red Cross was submitted. Most of the junior circles were pursuing a very fine programme of work making toys, knitting, children's garments, quilts, and collecting books, etc., for distribution, to children in orphanages and hospitals. A number of the girls were .making Karitane clothing. Juniors had also paid visits to the Home of Compassion, taking with them useful gifts for the inmates. This work was being carried out at Die following schools:—Wellington Girls' College, Wellington East Girls' College, Seatoun, Lyall Bay, Island Bay, Ncwtown, South Wellington, Makara, Taita, Trentham, Ngaio, Tawa Flat, Porirua, Pahautanui, Waikanae, Packakariki, Mangaroa, Pelone West, Petono Central, Pctone Convent, Hutt Valley Technical College, Hutt Valley High School, Sis. Peter and Paul Convent, Sacred Heart College, Northland, Thorjidon, Epuni. Stokes Valley.

It was decided to . hold a special meeting of the executive, to take place at an .early date, to formulate a plan of campaign to strengthen the society's resources.
