The butter will be manufactured at Kuku. Palestine since the days of the Crusades. THE SECOND BATTLE. Altogether, over three weeks of inanition bridged the, first and second battles for Gaza, the second, even at this distance of time, is very difficult to understand, much less defend. What made matters worse was the inadequacy of the preliminary, artillery bombardment.. The few tanks available could not materially aid an infantry attack that had to cover a front far too wide and deep for success to be possible, even if the enemy had not been permitted those weeks of undisturbed preparation. An hour or two was quite sufficient to convince H.Q. of the futility of the effort. Even that short space took a toll terrible in its severity. The 163 rd (Norfolk and Suffolk) Brigade emerged from the fighting of April 19, 1917, hardly a battalion strong, and with nearly every officer killed, or wounded. There were very few prisoners.
Shortly afterwards Sir Edmund (Lord) Allenby replaced Sir Archibald Murray as Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. In early' November Gaza and Beersheba fell to a vastly better-planned attack than the gamble-shambles I have tried to outline. Before Christmas camo the Union Jack flew over Jerusalem,
