LOWER GRANTS
LANDS TRUST
REVENUE EXCEEDED

MASTERTON, This Day.
The fact that the Masterton Trust Lands Tr.us.t had been incurring expenditure, in the past five years in excess of, its revenue was stressed by the chairman (Mr. J. Macfarlane Laing) at last night's meeting of the Trust when pointing out to the trustees that they could not secure an overdraft on anticipated revenue as was the case with local bodies, and that the expenditure would have to be reduced—or the trustees would become 'personally liable. After- some discussion, it was decided to make the following grants, which are 50 per cent, less than those for last year;— Free school books (primary), £100; secondary, £200. Capitation grants were made to the following primary schools: —Masterton Central, £40; Lansdowne, £20; West, £25; St. Patrick's, £15; Sol way, Whatman, and Fernridgs, £7 10s each. A grant of £7 10s was made.to the Central School Museum.
Other.items on the estimates were:—,, Completion of Opera House, £350; caretaker and sundries. £100; interest and sinking fund, £1000 loan, £65; property account, repairs and renewals. £400; capital improvements, £450; borough rates, £650; insurance, £300; interest, £653; sinking fund, £850; rental reserve, £200; land tax, £345; buildings reserve, £400; Winter Show. Fund deposit £100: miscellaneous salaries, etc., £816. Scholarship account: University entrance grants, £80. In connection with applications for srants from the Crippled Children Fund V.M.C.A., and the Dental Clinic, it was decided to acquaint those'organisations with the financial position and to review the position in February next. Othar applications were declined.
