HOLIDAY QUESTION

THE KING'S BIRTHDAY

. Though the judgment of Mr. J.H. 0 Luxford, S.M., in regard to payment ! for holidays referred primarily to Box- \ ing Day. said the manager of a Weilington| clothing factory "today, it opened a far wider question, and certain manufacturers were left.up in ths air. Next week the King's Birthday was to be observed on June 9, and apparently, under the Magistrate's ruling, five-day factories could; be opened on Saturday morning without additional pay to employees because, on account of the day's holiday on Wednesday, tha employees would not have'completed* fuli forty hours' work. The effect of such a procedure would simply be that in such five-day factories any full day's holiday would be discounted by 50 per , cent., since half a day would be worked without pay on the normally closed Saturday. The manufacturers ■ concerned and their employees throughout New Zealand did not know where they stood legally, for if they acted upon the judgment and opened their factories on the Saturday following the King's Birthday and the judgment was subsequently upset .on appeal, the employers would be liable to :a,further action and to a demand |pr the payment of overtime'for work done on Saturday morning. .. ~- .'.., ..':"

A discussion on the effect of the judgment;;"ity "the,*' Canterbury -Manufacturers' Association, is... reported oa page 23. __________ —-^,
