FATE OF KING SOLOMON

Within a few days the King Solomon gold mine at Waikaia will be completely abando.-ied. The work of withdrawing the plant from the mine has been proceeding steadily during the past fortnight (says the "Southland Times ) and practically everything of value removable has been taken, out. The mine will be abandoned. As a considerable amount of water flows through _tha mine the lower workings will nil quickly and will cause the destruction of the mine. An area of rich gold-bear; ing wash at the foot of the shaft was left unworked when the mine was opened in order .to protect the shal-, and a suggestion was made that this wash should be removed before the mine was abandoned. It was found, however that the mining regulations would not permit this action which wotild endanger the mam shaft. The disposal of the plant will be undertaken as' soon as possible. Talisman Dubbo reports for the fortnight ended May 20: Dubbo level— Reef in stopes from 638 ft to 664 ft north is of an average width of 12in. values at 98ft above level, good. Stoping on hanging wall or eastern section of the lode held up during past week owing to putting in stulls and timbering this new level. The work is completed. Better ventilation now exists in drive 1023 ft south, as leading stope has been beaten-out to within 45ft of the face. Work, suspended in this face owing to poor ventilation, resumed. A considerable quantity of ! water is flowing from roof and face which will tend to steady progress a little, but as the country is of a good standing nature - little difficulty should be experienced in rushing drive further south. The lode is 18in wide of rubbly quartz; 6in taken from centre assayed fair values. The stopes from 770 ft south to 977 ft south are producing ore of good .value. The lode averages from 6in to 42in in width. No. 4 level: Drive advanced to 273 ft south crosscut.
