A LONG WORK ENDS
After two hundred years of Intermittent work, the pavement of the huge square of St. Peter's, Rome, has now been completed. The work was begun by Mgr. Ludevico Serga'rdi in 1725. The last phase was taken in hand a few months ago by 300 workmen, working day' and night. About 30,000 square yards of space had to be covered. In addition, 400 square yards of underground passages and drains had to be constructed. The only part, of the ancient paving left is that round the obelisk in the centre of the square. This part is' well preserved because traffic, cannot pass over it. It was constructed from valuable stone found in an old storehouse dating from the days of the Roman Empire.
