A BIG WIN

HAWKE'S BAY TEAM

MATCH AT MASTERTON

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

MASTERTON, May 12. A holiday crowd of about 3000 at Memorial Park watched a youthful Wairarapa representative Rugby team overwhelmed by a weighty and experienced Hawke's Bay fifteen to the

tune of 42 points to 13. Although the visitors held a safe winning margin practically throughout, the landslide did uot come until the closing stages of the second spell, and for all. the disparity between the final scores it was a bright and, at times, exciting encounter. Apart from the last ten minutes, when Hawke's Bay put on points almost as,fast.as Don Bradman's flashing blade can score runs, Wairarapa played sound enough football; in fact, at times they threatened to sweep over the Hawke's Bay line by sheer determination, but their headlong rushes were met by grim defence, and in moments of crises Hawke's Bay struck back with level-headed precision. The Bay men had that resilience which only uncommon skill and speed and instinct can produced When in. the final stages Bay carried their score from 25-13 to 42-13 it is sufficient to say that Wairarapa were "done to a turn." They simply went out of business, and the visitors scored almost at will. j

It was a fairly even break in the opening spell, but weakness in defence at critical times on the part of the home team enabled the Bay to hold a 16-8 lead at the interval. Robins, Apsey, White, and Hansen scored tries for the visitors, Dyer converting two. Holland and Laing scored tries for Wairarapa, Brunton converting one. The nearest Wairarapa got to the Hawke's Bay score in the second session was 25-13, but.from then on the visitors put on pressure and Wairarapa more or less collapsed. Additional tries were scored for the Bay by White, O'Brien (2), Apsey, Robins, Hansen, Jackson, and Bowman, Robins converting one. For Wairarapa Brunton scored a fine try. which he converted.
