ROAD CODE
BOOKLET PREPARED
WIDE DISTRIBUTION
The Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) is following the lead of the "British Minister of Transport, and is distributing' booklets containing the road code and a summary of- the traffic regulations, with illustrations of traffic signs. The booklet will be dispatched within the next few days to .ail local authorities which issue drivers' licences.
A second booklet, giving the full text of,the traffic.and traffic signs regulations, and containing a detailed index, is also being similarly distributed. Local authorities have been specially requested to ensure that every person obtaining a renewal of his present licence, or a new licence, receives a copy of each booklet. Arrangements have also been made to send the road code booklet to each home in the country, so that pedestrians and cyclists, ss well as motorists^ may' be" able to inform themselves of their rights and their duties under the recently-amended legislation governing all classes of traffic. ."■' .'•
"I have felt that it is a duty falling on the Government to give everyone a full' opportunity to become acquainted with the rules and regulations," said the Minister. "A- few' minutes1 spent in reading the ■ code will be time well spent by the driver, cyclist, or pedestrian who has any regard for his or her own safety, and I earnestly hope that ah every-day observance of the rules and a substantial, decrease in accidents will follow. "After all, the matter is largely one for the good common ■ sense of each individual: No doubt there will be a small section of people whose- wilful carelessness or negligence will endanger life on the public streets and roads, but public opinion and the Courts will deal with such people."
