LOCAL ACTIVITIES

THREE NOVICE RACES HELD

Three clubs, Scottish, Wellington, and Varsity, held their novice races on Saturday afternoon. Useful practice runs were held by the other clubs, two of which, Olympic and Presbyterian, combined for ' a seven miles outing. The wind was again troublesome. SCOTTISH CLUB. The Scottish Club held us annual novice race at Miramar, the. course being the same as that used la previous years. There were eighteen competitors. The limit man, R. J. Ballantyne, made the pace .all the way, and, after leaving the hill and coming on to the road, he .was leading Garty (lmin 45sec)', by 30 yards with the third man 50 yards further back Going past the oil works, these two runners left the rest of the field, and were 200 yards ahead of Blewman (55sec), Ballantyne still maintaining his lead. Near the finish, Garty closed up on Ballantyne, and won by 10 yards. Blewman was easily 200 yards away, closely followed by, the scratch man, Kennedy. The remainder of the field was well strung out. Results were as follows:—F. Garty (lmin 45sec), 17min 15sec, 1; Ballantyne (2min 45sec), 17mm 17sec, 2, Blewman (55sec), 18min 37sec, 3; Kennedy (scr), 18min 43sec, 4; Archer Umin), 18min 54sec, 5; Downing (35sec), 19min 12sec, 6. • . „ _ Fastest times: Kennedy, 15mm 58sec, Garty, 16min 15sec; Blewman, 16min The run next Saturday will be from Wadestown. WELLINGTON CLUB. The Wellington Harrier Club held its maiden handicap from the Miramar tennis courts. This race is for colts, new runners who have not won a club or inter-club race. The trail of two and a half miles led along the mam road and around the hills, then south past the gasworks and around the main road home. The race, which was for the E. J. Green Cup, was won by Larsen, with G, Rowberry second and G. Roatz third, G. Larsen made fastest time, lsminis4sec. The other members of the club enjoyed a run: around the same, course before the main race. . Next Saturday's run will 'be held from Wadestown terminus. 'VARSITY CLUB. In the 'Varsity Club's novice race at Worser Bay, T. Price clipped 20 seconds off the time put up by A. Horsley last year. Considering the strong wind blowing down the final half-mile, which hurled sand in the faces of the runners, this was a very fine-effort. Price, who finished the distance in lomin 24sec, was followed by A. R. Burge ,15min 43sec), M. J. Morpeth (15min 54sec), Newall, and McElroy. Horsley was the only one to break 16 minutes last 'year., -.'-■■'■ Next week's run will be from Porirua. BROOKLYN CLUB. The Brooklyn Club held its run from St. Ronan's Church, Eastbourne. A good muster of runners' enabled three packs to take the field. No' trail was laid, but the packs followed; the general track over the Butterfly into Gollan's Valley, and back oyer the valley road to the beach, coming home via Muritai. D. Sinclair and A; Thompson set a hard pace from the start in the fast pack, but were headed towards the end by Pedersen. In the other packs • good running was shown by Dichbury and Wilson, two comparative newcomers to the club. The club's run next week "will be held from the Kelburn Kiosk. COMBINED RUN. Members of the Olympic Club were the guests, of the Presbyterian, Harrier Club at a "combined run held from St. John's Church, Willis Street. Conditions for runnine were good, and a field of nearly 100, in, four packs, followed a course of about seven miles. The trail was laid by Armstrong, Miller, and Pumphrey, and led first to Kelburn, then down Devon Street to Aro Street, and ud to Brooklyn. After going down Happy Valley Road .for about a mile the trail led over the hills to Mornington and returned home via Epuni Street. A run-in was held from Aro Street, the result being: Walls 1, Pybus 2, Smith 3. . McNaught and Reed were the first Olympic men home. The Presbyterian Club will run from Eastbourne rjext week. METHODIST CLUB. Thirty-five members of the Methodist Harrier Club ran from the Island Bay Methodist Church. Before the run Mr. A. D. Rpwse,'the club's trainer, gave an instructive ■■' talk on training and how to get and keep the body fitIn thanking Mr. Rowse the club captain, J. Walker, rightly, said that thp best thanks members could give their trainer was to put into practice the advice giyen by him. The runners were divided into three packs under the leadership of F. Kerslake, J. McKinney, and J. Kelly. The trail, laid by B. Burton and T. Hinde, led from the church up Mersey Street on to the hill along the top to the Zoo, round to Karitane Home, down to Lyall Bay, and along the waterfront home. The racing pack divided up into the other packs and gave helpful hints to the other members. The run-in held by the slow pack resulted in W. Scott being first, with B. Kimmins and R. Wiseman second and third respectively. W. Scott ran extremely well. The colts' pack, with increased numbers, had a delightful run of about three miles.Next week the novice race is to be held from the. Miramar Church. HUTT CLUB. Approximately 24 runners were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Clark at 74 Marsden Street, Lower Hutt,, for an excellent invitation run of eight miles. Three packs set out at a very fast clip, following the 'paper from Marsden Street to the river bank as far as Belmont. i There the trail continued ut> Hill Road past Cottle's homestead to the old Normandale road, and back home via Melling Hill. Several new, members showed good form, Lester and M. Peterson being very conspicuous throughout the journey. After the outing runners and friends were entertained at afternoon tea. The president (Mr. H. A. Walker), in thankine Mr, and Mrs. Clark for their hospitality, referred to the keen interest shown by them in the welfare of the harrier.movement in the Hutt Valley. Next week's run will be the1 novice race and president's handicap, to be held from Hutt Park.
